As December rolls around, it’s only natural for us to look back and reflect on the past 12 months. What successes can we celebrate? What milestones have we achieved? And most importantly, are there any setbacks we can learn from for the year ahead?
Before the 2018 calendar year comes to a close, we asked our English 1 teacher bloggers across China to highlight something significant they accomplished this year.
“Looking back on what was a great year, I would say completing the CertTESOL was certainly a highlight. I learned a great deal from some very talented teachers and trainers on what was a very enjoyable course. I'd recommend it to anyone considering taking the next step in their development. (I later had the opportunity to interview one of my trainers, which was a powerful experience and another highlight of 2018.)”

“2018 for me included the decision to remain in China after my first year and move from the middle of the country (Zhengzhou, Henan) to the south-east (Taizhou, Zhejiang). I’ve planted myself here in Taizhou with a focus on becoming a better teacher and building a community. The friendships I’m cultivating here have been the most rewarding. This December, though I miss my family and friends back home, I realise I now have the wonderful and growing circle of friends I had hoped for – and lots of fun too! I’m grateful for, and humbled by, the power of intention and focus. Bravo, 2018! I’m looking forward to the adventures 2019 will bring.”

“As I reflect on my time with English 1 this year, I never imagined I would experience so much in such a short time. I moved my family around the world, visited the Jade Buddha Temple, experienced my first ancient city, and enjoyed numerous types of cuisine. Each day, I’m surprised by the opportunities I encounter and feel truly blessed to be in a position to continue learning about Chinese culture. If the past is anything to go by, I won’t be disappointed by what the future holds.”

“This year, our school moved into a larger facility than our previous location. Our old school was already big, but our new premises make us one of the largest Kids and Teens schools in the country! I’m proud of our teachers and staff for their flexibility, understanding, and creativity in making the transition impressively smooth. Moving is rarely easy and often comes with stress and complaints – but that hasn’t been the case for us. Not only did we move, but we also grew in staff and student numbers! Thank you, SZ4!”

“This year, I travelled more than I ever imagined I would. I also finally graduated from university and started working with English 1, teaching English as a second language in China. I moved to Shenzhen just a month ago, but I’m diving into every opportunity that comes my way – and loving every second! I can’t wait to see what the year ahead holds.”

“This year, I decided to embark on a plant-based adventure, starting with the VeganStep Challenge at the beginning of the year. It’s a two-week introduction to a plant-based lifestyle. One of the best parts of the programme was enjoying discounts on vegan meals at various restaurants across Shanghai. I haven’t eaten meat since 24th June – I’m approaching the six-month mark! Additionally, I’ve decided to break up with refined sugar. I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store – check in with me and my vegan journey in six months!”

“This year, I made the huge decision to stay in Shanghai for another year with English 1. I took on more responsibilities at my centre and within the city, mentoring and training new teachers. I also had plenty of opportunities to travel across Asia – to the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Japan. Within China, I finally climbed the Great Wall, visited the Temple of Heaven, the Beijing Olympic Park, and the vast Forbidden City. This year was truly one for the books (and my passport). With all these memories and a serious case of the travel bug, I’m already planning more trips for next year!”

“The highlight of my year professionally was becoming a Senior Teacher. It pushed me to stretch my boundaries, and I’ve gained many new skills. This role has even helped me discover abilities I didn’t know I had! It’s also allowed me to see myself in a new and more positive light.”

“This year, I got to do something I’ve always dreamed of – travel around Asia. Although I’d been to China over five times before, I was always on programmes that didn’t allow travel outside the country. English 1 finally gave me the freedom to visit the places I’d always wanted to explore. In just ten months, I’ve travelled to Macau, Korea, and taken several trips to Hong Kong. I’ve also journeyed within China, discovering amazing cities like Xi’an, Sanya, Suzhou, and Nanjing. I’m incredibly grateful for the independence English 1 has given me to tick off these must-see destinations – and to make memories that will last a lifetime.”
