Balikpapan is a port city on the East coast of the island of Borneo, and is the second largest city in Indonesian-administered Kalimantan, after Samarinda.
Balikpapan is widely recognised as being one of the easiest cities to live in Indonesia. As part of the Earth Hour City Challenge, the city of Balikpapan was recognized as Indonesia’s Most Loveable City in 2015. Large parks are located throughout the city, and there is a botanical garden to rival Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, and a multitude of malls cater to consumers. While teaching English in Balikpapan, you will be able to travel, explore and enjoy life on one of the world’s most breathtaking islands.
Nature tourism – There are wildlife exhibitions such as the Samboja Lestari, an Orangutan Conservancy, a sun bear sanctuary and a crocodile breeding Park in Lamaru.
Beaches – Manggar Beach, Segara Beach, Monument Beach, Kemala Beach and Brigade Mobile Beach are all located nearby to Balikpapan and make for enticing day trips or weekend getaways.
Balikpapan Botanical Garden – The first of its kind, signed as a part of the Wain River Conservation Forest. It has a total area of 10,000 hectares and is populated with a variety of wildlife endemic to Kalimantan including orangutans, sun bears, deer, and several species of birds.
The most livable city in Indonesia – Balikpapan has been named Indonesia’s most livable city three times – in 2009, 2011 and 2013. It has a thriving industry, booming economy and all manner of modern conveniences from leafy green parks to bustling shopping malls.
